January 17, Fineko/abc.az. Google has signed the world's largest deal for carbon removal with the use of biochar.
ABC.AZ informs that the company will buy carbon credits for 100,000 tons of CO₂ from Indian startup Varaha, which will help offset the growing emissions from AI development.
The deal runs until 2030. Biochar will be produced at the Varaha plant in the Indian state of Gujarat from invasive plant Prosopis Juliflora, which displaces native grasses and harms pastures.
Biochar is considered one of the most promising ways of long-term carbon removal. The carbon in it remains trapped for 1,000 to 2,500 years, making it an ideal tool for offsetting emissions. Varaha claims that their technology ensures carbon conservation for 1,600 years.
