January 21, Fineko/abc.az. In 2024, the wealth of billionaires in the world increased by a record of $2 trillion, which is 3-fold faster than in 2023, ABC.AZ informs, referring to Oxfam.
According to this charity organization’s report, the quantity of billionaires in the world grew by 204 people and reached 2,769. Their total wealth increased from $13 trillion up to $15 trillion in 12 months, the second largest annual rise in recorded history.
According to the study, the wealth of the 10 richest people on the planet grew by an average of $100 million per day. Even if they had lost 99% of their assets, they would still be billionaires.
Meanwhile, the global poverty rate has remained virtually unchanged in recent decades: about 3.6 billion people – 44% of the world's population – continue to live below the poverty line.
According to Oxfam, one in ten women in the world is in extreme poverty.
The organization emphasizes that a significant part of the wealth of billionaires is not earned, but received as a result of inheritance, "nepotism and corruption" or monopoly control.
