January 28, Fineko/abc.az. After the decree of U.S. President Donald Trump, Google wanted to rename the Gulf of Mexico to American and Mount Denali to McKinley in Google Maps. The changes will be reflected immediately after they appear in the Geographic Names Information System (GNIS).

ABC.AZ reports that Google announced this on X.

"We have a well-established practice of renaming names after making changes in official government resources. When the renaming to GNIS takes place, we will promptly update Google Maps to display Mount McKinley and the American Gulf," the company said.

Google noted that in cases where the names of geographical objects differ for different states, their citizens see only the official version adopted in the host country, and for residents of other countries both names are displayed.
