February 7, Fineko/abc.az. SOCAR Turkiye Enerji is exploring the possibility of producing eco-friendly aviation fuel at STAR refinery, ABC.AZ reports, quoting the head of SOCAR Turkiye division for oil refining & petrochemistry, Kanan Mirzoyev.
"In the field of oil refining, we expect an increase in demand for biofuels, and in this regard, we have a project that we are currently working on. This is a project for the production of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). It is currently under technical evaluation, and we believe that SAF production will be the largest transformation at the refinery. We have already started work on this project," Mirzoyev said.
In addition, he noted that in the petrochemical sector, the company as a whole expects an increase in demand for chemical and petrochemical products.
"We believe the petrochemical and chemical industries will create the greatest demand for oil. Therefore, our strategy as SOCAR is to develop in these sectors," he stressed.
SAF is a sustainable aviation fuel that is an eco-friendly version of Jet-A1 fuel. Unlike conventional jet fuel, SAF in its pure form reduces carbon emissions by 80%. SAF and Jet-A1 are interchangeable, which allows them to be mixed in airport storage tanks with available fuel.
The U.S. plans to switch to 50% SAF usage by 2050. The EU, starting in 2025, will introduce the use of SAF at the level of 2%, increasing this figure to 5% from 2030 and to 63% by 2050.
