7 out of 9 vital systems of the planet are under threat - PIK report

September 25, Fineko/abc.az. According to the Potsdam Institute for the Study of the Effects of Climate Change (German: Potsdam-Institut für Klimafolgenforschung - PIK), 7 out of the 9 critical planetary limits have been exceeded: climate change, destruction of the biosphere, land use, freshwater, nitrogen and phosphorus cycles, exposure to chemicals and ocean acidification.

ABC.AZ informs that only aerosol pollution and the state of the ozone layer remain within safe limits. Scientists warn that exceeding the thresholds leads to the risk of irreversible violations.

A new risk factor is acidification of the oceans due to the burning of fossil fuels and deforestation. This undermines the stabilizing role of the oceans, threatens corals, Arctic ecosystems and the entire food chain, including human food security.
