France alarms about increase in fraud with label ‘Made in France’

November 6, Fineko/abc.az. An investigation conducted by the General Directorate for Competition, Consumer Protection and Anti-Fraud (DGCCRF) has shown that trademark "Made in France" has increasingly been used for fraudulent activities, ABC.AZ reports, referring to BFM TV.

In 2023, DGCCRF investigated non-food products with the following statements about their place of origin: "made in France", "made in Paris", "made in France". During the audit, it was found that out of almost 1,500 organizations checked for the accuracy of the statements, in 16% of cases their inconsistency was revealed. Since that time, according to DGCCRF, the situation has improved, but there is still too much unreliable data, especially regarding everyday goods such as toys, cosmetics, candles, clothing and accessories.

Imported goods often use French symbols - a flag, a map, a tricolor border or a rooster - to create the illusion of French origin, although in fact only packaging was made in France. DGCCRF recalls that a product can be considered "made in France" only if it is fully manufactured or has undergone significant processing in the country.
