ADB: Azerbaijan becomes leader in decarbonization in region

December 5, Fineko/abc.az. Azerbaijan is becoming a leader in decarbonization in the region.

ABC.AZ informs that Kangbin Zheng, the head of the ADB team and energy specialist, made the relevant statement at the presentation of the decarbonization project within the cooperation of Azerbaijan Railways (ADY) and ADB in Baku.

"Favorable business environment for decarbonization has already been created in Azerbaijan. Speech is about the legal framework, political guarantees, fiscal incentives, repurchase mechanisms, market access, as well as financial and contractual protection. Compared to other countries in the region, we can say that Azerbaijan is now becoming a leader," he stressed.

Mr. Zheng noted that ADY demonstrates strong commitment to decorbanization and carries out effective actions. ADY has already tried various methods: using solar energy, increasing energy efficiency through renewal and expansion of electrification. The publication of the 2024 Sustainability Report has created a solid foundation for demonstrating ADY's actions and first results.

"Our task now is to build on what ADY has already achieved and speed up the process. It's about evaluating what has already been done well, what can be learned in other countries, and scaling it up in the next five years," he added.

According to the ADB representative, one of the main directions of ADY is to increase freight and passenger transportation.

"As transportation volumes increase, energy consumption naturally increases, whether it's fossil fuels or electricity. The challenges for ADY in the next 5 years will grow along with the growth of traffic volumes. If measures are not taken now, it will become a serious problem in the future," Mr. Zheng said.
