December 15, Fineko/abc.az. The European Union has taken a decision to permanently immobilize Russian assets, ABC.AZ informs, quoting Kaya Kallas, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.
"The EU has just decided to permanently immobilize Russian assets," Kallas wrote on X.
According to Kallas, this means that "up to 210 billion euros of Russian funds will remain in the EU, unless Russia fully pays reparations to Ukraine for the damage it has caused".
The head of European diplomacy also said that a meeting of the European Council would be held next week, which, according to Kallas, would be crucial to meet Ukraine's financial needs in the coming years.
Up to this point, the "freezing" of Russian sovereign funds, most of which are stored in Belgian depository Euroclear, was extended every six months and required the unanimous support of all EU countries. The new decision eliminates the risk that during the next vote, one of the countries friendly to Russia may violate the consensus and force the EU to return the funds to Moscow.
