December 15, Fineko/abc.az. Amid a drop in the number of sheep in local farms in Azerbaijan, the import of these animals from abroad has accelerated for the past months of this year. In parallel with Mongolia, Somalia joined the geography of imports.

ABC.AZ informs that in the first 10 months of 2025, the volume of frozen mutton in the country increased to 291.16 tons, and the cost reached $1.94 million.

This means a rise of 65% versus Jan-Oct 2024. The bulk of imports – 244.66 tons or 979,550 – came from Mongolia.

Since October, imports have also totaled 46.5 tons ($960,000) of frozen mutton from Somalia.

Importing companies imported 147.43 tons of frozen mutton from Mongolia in the first 9 months of this year alone, and the import cost reached $589,720.

Azerbaijan reimburses the supply of mutton with imports in parallel with the domestic market and mainly buys it live from neighboring Georgia and Russia. In total, 289,000 live sheep were imported in the first 10 months of the year, which is 89% higher versus the same period of last year. The import of live sheep caused an outflow of currency from the country for totally $31.4 million.
