January 28, Fineko/abc.az. Pressure is mounting on the European Commission to immediately remove fertilizers from the Carbon Boundary Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM).
ABC.AZ reports that Austria, with the support of 11 EU countries, including France, has called for temporary suspension of CBAM for fertilizers pending the creation of a compensation mechanism for farmers.
The initiative follows a letter from France and eight other EU states proposing to suspend the tax retroactively from January 1 to December 31, 2026. Representatives of the agricultural sector warn of the risks of disrupting fertilizer supplies by the planting season.
The European Commission acknowledged that the carbon tax was one of the reasons for farmers' protests, and recalled the possibility of temporarily suspending certain duties and taxes in emergency circumstances, as well as development of a pan-European fertilizer plan.
