July 19, Fineko/abc.az. A drought was analyzed in the territory of Azerbaijan. More than 15% of the territory of Azerbaijan is under the threat of drought.
ABC.AZ reports that the statement was made by Murad Jamalov, a representative of space agency Azercosmos (under the Ministry of Digital Development and Transport).
He noted that this drought is mainly observed in the desert areas of the Kura-Araz lowland.
Why are satellite images used to track climate change or to track these processes? Because this is a very dynamic process, and it knows no boundaries. Space satellites are used to cover a large area. The climate report is divided into 5 areas: cryosphere - changes in mountains, hydrosphere - analysis of rivers and water sources, lithosphere - the problem of drought in deserts, biosphere - habitat issues and atmosphere - changes that occur in the air.
"According to the World Bank report, Azerbaijan is in 18th place in terms of the risk of severe drought until 2040. Climate models predict that in the period from 2020 to 2040, the temperature will rise by 0.5-2.5 degrees, and precipitation will decrease. The activities of the space industry on climate change make it possible to analyze satellite images," Jamalov stressed.
