Iranian leader proposes to move the capital

September 10, Fineko/abc.az. It is impossible to continue the current approach to development of the country. If we continue to move raw materials from the south of the country and from the sea to the center, and then turn them into products and send them back to the south for export, this will significantly weaken our competitiveness. We have no choice but to move the economic and political center of the country to the south, closer to the sea.

ABC.AZ reports that this statement was made by Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian during a visit to infrastructure projects. He added that the need is linked with growing logistical and environmental problems of Tehran.

The president stressed that development of Tehran with the existing problems is a waste of time.

"Tehran as the capital is facing problems such as water shortages, land subsidence, air pollution, which are only getting worse as the policies and measures that have been adopted and implemented so far continue," the Iranian president said.

The matter of moving the capital was discussed in 2009, 2013 and 2017 because of problems relating to congestion of the city, environmental and infrastructural difficulties.
