September 17, Fineko/abc.az. Meta Corporation has blocked the accounts of RT, media group Rossiya Segodnya and "related organizations" on its platforms, Fox News quoted the company as saying.
Social networks Instagram and Facebook, Threads app and WhatsApp messenger belong to Meta.
"After careful consideration, we’ve expanded the current measures against Russian state media," said a Meta representative, noting that accounts are unavailable in company's applications worldwide due to attempts at "foreign interference".
The decision was announced shortly after the U.S. imposed sanctions against Russia Today, the head of the media group, TV presenter Dmitry Kiselyov, and ordered to complete all financial transactions with them by November 13. RT, editor-in-chief Margarita Simonyan and several top managers were also subject to restrictions for their involvement in creating and distributing content "with hidden messages from the Russian government" to the American audience.
According to the American authorities, RT tried to "secretly recruit unsuspecting American influencers to support its campaign of malicious influence". U.S. Secretary of State Anthony Blinken announced that his country, along with Canada and Britain, have launched a joint campaign to "unite partners around the world to respond to the threat from RT and other Russian instruments of influence and disinformation".
