EU wants to impose a carbon tax on LNG by 2027

September 19, Fineko/abc.az. LNG may fall under the mechanism of import duties on carbon-intensive goods in the EU within three years, according to Wood Mackenzie.

ABC.AZ reports that analysts believe that the EU is unlikely to take principled measures until it is sure that its exports are reliable. At that, impact of LNG import costs on premium markets is estimated (less than €1 per MWh) for new technological LNG plants. However, conversion of the old LNG plant can cost $6 per million BTU (British thermal unit).

The import carbon tax is a European mechanism for importers to pay for emissions of carbon—intensive goods. The duty will be imposed from 2026 on hydrogen, electricity and fertilizers, steel and cement.
