Fish resources of the North Atlantic undermined, and countries haven’t agreed

October 7, Fineko/abc.az. Overfishing over the past decade is linked with the fact that Norway, the UK, the Faroe Islands and the EU have not agreed on the allocation of quotas, as a result of which unilateral quotas exceed the catch volumes recommended by the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES).

ABC.AZ reports that in 2023, the catch of mackerel and herring in the Northeast Atlantic exceeded the ICES recommended figures by 35% and 33%, respectively. The catch of whiting exceeded the recommended value by 28%.

The political situation makes it possible to actually ignore the ICES recommendations. The Council recommended reducing herring quotas by 44% in 2023. For 2025, ICES recommends reducing mackerel quotas by 22%.
