Toyota builds a futuristic city in Japan

January 9, Fineko/abc.az. Japanese company Toyota Motor has announced plans to move its first hundred residents to the innovative city at the foot of Mount Fuji this fall.

ABC.AZ reports that the first residents of Woven City will be mostly Toyota employees and their family members. As part of the initial phase, the city's population is to gradually increase to 2,000 people.

"This year, the settlement of the first residents will begin, and we will gradually breathe life into Woven City. We are committed to accelerating the testing and development of new technologies in Woven City," Toyota chairman Akio Toyoda said at a press conference at CES exhibition in Las Vegas.

Five years ago, Toyoda, then president of the company, presented plans for the creation of this "living laboratory", stating that the city would become completely environmentally friendly and demonstrate achievements in the field of artificial intelligence, advanced robotics, unmanned vehicles and smart homes.

However, the city will not be open to the general public for at least two years, and Toyota's chairman acknowledged that the project may never become profitable.

"Will Woven City bring profit to Toyota? Probably not. As a global company, we consider it our responsibility to invest in our common future," Toyoda said at the time.

A key part of Toyota's broader initiative is a new car software platform and operating system called Arene, designed to speed up the car creation process and reduce costs. The company plans to introduce this system this year and make it a core component of next-generation electric vehicles starting in 2026.
