January 13, Fineko/abc.az. The U.S.added NIS (oil industry of Serbia - Naftne industrije Srbije) to the sanctions list in order to deprive Russia of energy revenues, ABC.AZ reports, quoting U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for European & Eurasian Affairs James O'Brien.

He added that this measure will help complicate the situation of the Russian army in the conflict in Ukraine.

The U.S. Assistant Secretary of State also clarified that despite the fact that NIS belongs not only to Russia, but also to Serbia, the U.S. has not imposed sanctions against the second country. First of all, the sanctions relate to tankers that transport oil from the Russian Federation, as well as against companies that benefit from Russia's energy trade. He emphasized that Moscow acquired the company for a fairly low cost, and now extracts huge funds from Serbia. The U.S. aims to stop this flow.

"A feasible option to satisfy Washington is the complete withdrawal of Russian capital and a reduction in the share from 56.15% to 0%," he stressed.
