In 2024, China's population declined for the third year in a row, while the number of deaths slightly exceeded the birth rate, and experts warn that this trend will increase in the coming years, ABC.AZ informs, referring to the State Statistical Office of the People's Republic of China.
China's total population reduced by 1.39 million to 1.408 billion in 2024, compared with 1.409 billion in 2023.
According to a widely distributed report, 9.54 million people were born in the country and 10.93 million people died in 12 months. The birth and death rates were 6.77 and 7.76 ppm, respectively.
Official estimates show that the male population in China is estimated at 719.09 million (a drop of 0.1%), while the female population is 689.19 million (almost unchanged). People aged 16 to 59 account for 60.9% (857.98 million people), which is 0.4 p.p. less than in 2023. The number of citizens over the age of 65 reached 220.23 million (an increase of 1.6%).
As can be seen from the published statistics, in 2024, the urban population of China increased by 1.1% (to 943.5 million people). In rural areas, it reached 464.78 million people, a decline of 2.5%.
In 2022, China's population began to lower for the first time in the last 60 years, decreasing by 850,000 people. In 2023, the figure dropped by another 2.08 million people.
