February 7, Fineko/abc.az. Scientists from Xihu University in Hangzhou (Zhejiang Province) have developed highly efficient flexible multilayer solar cells.
ABC.AZ reports that they can achieve high energy conversion efficiency of 23.4%. The study was published in journal Nature Photonics.
The innovation of solar cells lies in their tandem design. It consists of 15 layers that capture different wavelengths of sunlight. This makes it possible to increase the efficiency of energy conversion compared to conventional single-layer solar panels.
The elements are flexible and very thin - their thickness is comparable to a human hair, which makes them convenient for use in wearable gadgets and electric vehicles, as well as in the construction industry. The new technology is expected to reduce transportation and installation costs.
