March 12, Fineko/abc.az. Switching from rice to millet, corn and sorghum will allow to reduce crop losses relating to climate change by 11%.
ABC.AZ reports that this is evidenced by the results of a joint study by the University of Delaware, USA, Columbia University, USA, Indian School of Business, India, Polytechnic University of Turin, Italy and the University of Delaware, USA.
Indian farmers have traditionally relied on rice as their most profitable crop. However, rice farming is suffering from climate change. Grain crops, in particular millet, corn, and sorghum, tolerate climate fluctuations more easily and become more economically profitable over time.
A shift towards alternative grain crops can stabilize agricultural production. Dongyang Wei, the lead author of the study, explained that India will increase the stability of grain production and the profitability of the agricultural sector if it significantly reduces rice cultivation in favor of other grain crops.
