India sets record for purchases of Russian oil in May 2025

May 21, Fineko/abc.az. In May 2025, India increased its imports of Russian oil up to 1.8 million b/d, a record level over the past 10 months.

ABC.AZ reports that growth is associated with active purchases of low-sulfur oil from refineries, including ESPO Blend (BCTO).

Traders estimate that high demand will continue at least until July 2025, taking into account orders for more than 10 shipments of ESPO delivered in June, which have already been contracted.

According to Rystad Energy analysts, light oil purchases increased due to the shutdown of primary oil distillation units at the large Indian refineries Reliance Industries and MRPL, which increased the need for imported raw materials for catalytic cracking units.

It is noted that some of the supplies are carried out under long-term contracts between Reliance and Rosneft.
