May 22, Fineko/abc.az. OpenAI, a company known for creating chatbot ChatGPT, is buying startup IO Products, specializing in development of gadgets suitable for using artificial intelligence technologies, AB.AZ reports, referring to the American media. The deal could cost $6.5 billion. This is the largest purchase in the history of OpenAI.

IO Products was founded a year earlier by former Apple chief designer Jony Ive. He worked for the company for almost 30 years and participated in development of dozens of its products, including iMac, MacBook, iPhone and iPad. In 2019, Jony Ive left Apple and started developing his own projects, one of which was io Products. At the end of 2024, OpenAI had already bought 23% of io.

Now John Ive and his OpenAI team will work on developing gadgets that will be more suitable for working with artificial intelligence than conventional smartphones. The first such devices are to be released in 2026.
