June 11, Fineko/abc.az. Rice shortages in Japan have become a serious social problem, threatening the positions of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party.
ABC.AZ reports that shortage has been increasing since 2023 and has led to higher prices: 5 kg of rice now costs about 4,223 yens ($29.15), almost twice as much as a year ago.
This hit family budgets, affected inflation (up to 3.5% in April) and led to a reduction in rice portions in schools and restaurants. Some supermarkets have limited the sale of one package per customer. At the end of May, the Japanese government promised to sell rice from government stocks in order to bring down prices that had been rising all last year.
