November 14, Fineko/abc.az. The U.S. has approved South Korea's enrichment of uranium for civilian purposes, including the use of fuel for nuclear attack submarines, ABC.AZ informs, referring to today’s statement by the White House press service.
The decision allows Seoul to develop its own nuclear power industry and strengthen its naval capabilities in the face of growing instability in the region. It is emphasized that all activities will be carried out within the framework of international standards.
The agreement was reached amid a visit to the U.S. by South Korean President Lee Jae-myung.
South Korea has long sought permission from the U.S. to enrich uranium and reprocess spent fuel, processes prohibited by a 1974 bilateral agreement. In recent years, Seoul has insisted on renegotiating the terms, citing the need for energy independence and threats from North Korea.
