U.S. begins selling Venezuelan oil at $45 a barrel

12:20 - 19.01.2026

January 19, Fineko/abc.az. The head of the U.S. Department of Energy, Chris Wright, confirmed the sale of Venezuelan oil at $45 per barrel after the transfer of control over Caracas' exports to Washington. Previously, under the Maduro administration, the country received around $31 per barrel due to sanctions and mediators.

The new price remains below the market (Brent - nearly $64), which means a significant discount. All income is accumulated in accounts controlled by the U.S. The first deals worth $500 million have already been completed under a $2 billion contract providing for the export of up to 50 million barrels.

This step strengthens the influence of the U.S. in the energy market and limits the positions of China and Russia in Venezuela.
