Ukraine's energy system operates mainly at expense of nuclear power plants

January 19, Fineko/abc.az. Ukraine's energy system continues to function almost exclusively thanks to nuclear power plants, which ensures more than 70% of country's capacity.

ABC.AZ informs that after extensive damage to the infrastructure, the total capacity decreased to 11 GW with demand of nearly 18 GW.

The capacity of the NPPs is approximately 7.88 GW (Rivne - 2.88 GW, Khmelnitsky - 2 GW, South Ukrainian - 3 GW). Ukraine is trying to compensate for the deficit by importing electricity from Europe, but the possibilities are limited - close to 2 GW.

The most serious problems with electricity supply are observed in Dnepropetrovsk, Zaporozhye, Kiev, Odessa and Kharkov. Blackouts last up to 20 hours a day, sometimes for several days in a row, and water and heating may go out along with electricity.
