January 23, Fineko/abc.az. The alternative cargo corridor announced by Azerbaijan and Armenia does not pose a threat to Georgia's transit potential.
ABC.AZ reports that Georgian PM Irakli Kobakhidze said this, when commenting on the statements made by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian President Vahagn Khachaturian in Davos about possible direct cargo transportation between Baku and Yerevan amid improving bilateral relationships.
According to Kobakhidze, the alternative route does not pose a risk to Georgia: "There is a simple indicator confirming this: over the past 5 years, the volume of traffic along the Middle Corridor has increased sevenfold. Under such conditions, our main task is to make the most efficient use of the existing infrastructure in order to meet the growing cargo turnover. Against the background of such growth, the alternative corridor will only be an addition to our transit function," the PM underlined.
It is noted that since the end of 2025, Azerbaijan has been supplying petroleum products to Armenia through the territory of Georgia.
