March 3, Fineko/abc.az. Poland's public debt increased by a record of 322.6 billion zlotys ($89 billion) in 2025.

ABC.AZ reports that Business Insider informs about this with reference to the Ministry of Finance of Poland.

By the end of December, the total debt of the state treasury (Skarb Państwa) reached 1.95 trillion zlotys, which is almost 20% more than a year earlier. In December alone, growth reached 43.1 billion zlotys.

The main cause of the increase was high budget expenditures, including financing a deficit of 275.6 billion zlotys. The internal debt grew by 301 billion zlotys and the external debt by 21.6 billion zlotys. The largest buyers of new government bonds were Polish banks, which significantly increased their investments.

According to preliminary data, in January 2026, the debt rose by another 46.4 billion zlotys. The authorities expect that by the end of 2026 it may increase by another 350 billion zlotys, including due to increased defense spending.

In 2025, 187 billion zlotys (4.7% of GDP) were allocated for defense and 200 billion zlotys are planned for 2026. The Ministry of Finance predicts that the deficit will remain high until 2029, and by 2036 the national debt may reach 107% of GDP.
