Coal prices soar up to a 3-year high amid shutdown of LNG production in Qatar

Coal prices for power plants have jumped the most in three years, as the unprecedented shutdown of a liquefied natural gas plant in Qatar has increased the need for fuel replacement in the electricity sector.

Newcastle coal futures, the Asian benchmark, jumped 8.6% up to $128.7 per tonne on Monday, March 2. This was the highest price for a first-month contract since December 2024.
