January 12, Fineko/abc.az. Payments for transit support, road tolls depending on the distance, fuel restrictions, as well as additional technical inspection procedures ultimately weaken the competitiveness of Azerbaijani carriers in the transport corridors of the same direction.
ABC.AZ informs that the president of the International Association of Automobile Carriers of Azerbaijan (ABADA), Gabib Hasanov, says that development of the Middle Corridor helps reduce logistics costs, open new routes, and increase traffic and cargo flows: "This corridor creates additional opportunities for Azerbaijani carriers in the transportation of goods between Europe and Central Asia. The commissioning of the Zangezur Corridor will make an important contribution to reducing the costs of companies engaged in international road transport and logistics, speeding up transportation and increasing the use of Azerbaijan's transit potential. This corridor will ensure the diversification of existing transport routes, acting as an additional and alternative route for cargo transportation between Europe and Central Asia. The integration of the Zangezur Corridor with transport corridors North-South and East-West will further enhance its strategic importance in Europe-Asia trade and economic relations."
Hasanov stressed that Azerbaijan's national road carriers operating along the North–South and East–West transport corridors face a lack of full parity in the application of conditions in a number of areas: "This directly affects the competitive environment between carriers operating along the same transport corridors and routes. Thus, in some countries, transit fees, road taxes, technical and administrative requirements are applied according to different rules, which leads to an increase in the cost of transportation for our national carriers. Transit fees, distance-dependent road tolls, fuel restrictions, as well as additional technical inspection procedures ultimately weaken the competitiveness of Azerbaijani carriers in unidirectional transport corridors."
He added that differences in loading and procedures existing at some border crossings affect the efficiency of transportation: "This is one of the factors limiting the planning capabilities of our national carriers. At the same time, the use of simplified and transparent procedures, risk-based control mechanisms and digital solutions for foreign motor vehicles passing through the territory of Azerbaijan ensures uninterrupted transit traffic and ensures a more stable movement of cargo flows. We believe that for the effective and sustainable development of international transport corridors, the application of such practical and balanced approaches on a reciprocal basis in partner countries, as well as the formation of uniform and transparent transit rules, can create a fairer competitive environment for all carriers operating on transport corridors of the same direction."
