Thus, the volume of cargo handling increased by 7.2% and totaled 4061.6 thousand tons vs. the figure of 2018 (3787.8 thousand tons). 35,152 TEU containers were handled in 2019, which, in turn, makes a 58% growth vs. 2018 (this indicator totaled 22,887 TEU in 2018). A 57% growth was reached in handling of wheeled equipment units, including TIR trucks. A total of 671 units of wheeled equipment was handled.

On October 16, 2019 the Port of Baku received an “EcoPorts” PERS certificate from the European Sea Ports Organization – ESPO. In this way, the Port of Baku was the first to get an “EcoPorts” PERS certificate in the Caspian Sea region. “The reception of the mentioned certificate by the Port is the result of the purposeful work carried out by the port employees and the European partners in the last three years. The Port of Baku will keep serving as an example for other ports in the region by implementing its environment-oriented policy”.

Taleh Ziyadov also emphasized a significance of the agreement signed on November 26 with the Austrian ÖBB Rail Cargo Group and Cabooter Group (NL) to strengthen and expand the freight traffic from Europe to Central Asia and China via the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route (Middle Corridor). According to the Director-General, this agreement is an important milestone in expanding the West-to-East transport corridor from Europe’s busiest logistics hubs in the Netherlands such as Venlo and Germany to Turkey (Istanbul), Azerbaijan (Baku), Central Asia and further to China.

The launch of the customs and temporary storage facility within the Port of Baku in March is another important event expected this year. This facility will contribute to the growth of cargo transportation, and increase operations opportunities of local and foreign companies.
