Why can't the retirement age be lowered in Azerbaijan? - Reason

May 25, Fineko/abc.az. Proposals are periodically made to reduce the retirement age in Azerbaijan. It is proposed that women retire at 60 and men at 63.

But the probability of lowering the retirement age in our country is weak. According to officials, the current conditions do not allow lowering the retirement age.

So, what factors prevent the retirement age from decreasing?

ABC.AZ reports that currently men can retire at 65 and women at 62.

The retirement age of women will increase annually by 6 months and will reach 65 years from 1 July 2026.

Applying to the world experience, we see that there are 2 main factors affecting retirement age. This is the share of elderly people in the population of the country and the number of employees.

For Azerbaijan, both indicators make it impossible to reduce the retirement age in the future.

So, along with the growth of the elderly population in our country, there is no proportional improvement in the ratio of the number of employees to the number of pensioners. For these reasons, the government cannot not only lower the retirement age, but also slightly raise its age threshold.
