Gastric neurosis or irritable bowel syndrome

August 31, Fineko/abc.az.  Irritable bowel syndrome or neurosis of the stomach is formed due to violation of the mechanism of regulation of the nervous system. The disease can appear after severe psychological trauma or stress.  In some cases, it is mistakenly believed that this disease occurs in persons who are emotionally labile, prone to irritation and not able to cope with their emotions. But in fact, neurosis of the stomach, along with highly psychoemotional people, also occurs in persons who at first glance seem cold-blooded and able to suppress their emotions. Such composure is just an appearance, but in reality emotional persons just know how to hide their reaction.

Trigger factors, along with psychological stress and conflict situations, may also include irrational nutrition. In addition, many diseases, such as inflammation of the ovaries, diseases of the bladder, prostate and rectum can cause irritable bowel syndrome.

This disease is observed in young and middle-aged people. The frequency of occurrence of this disease in women, compared with men, is 2-3 times more.

Signs of the disease

Symptoms of the disease may vary depending on the irritation factor and the reaction of the nervous system. Signs of general neurosis are absent-mindedness, anxiety, insomnia, headache, sweating, and the following complaints:

  • Spastic obstruction (bowel spasms - signs: discomfort and pain);
  • Constipation or diarrhea. Usually intestinal habits is observed 2-5 times in the morning, and during the day - after each meal;
  • Pain and stomach cramps. The degree of pain can range from a simple feeling of discomfort to unbearable pain. Pain increases after meals and in the evening;
  • Flatulence. After a meal, there is a bloating in the abdomen, which reaches a peak level by evening. 
  • In addition to these complaints, there may also be pain in the left side, in the hypochondrium, nausea, stomach pain, arrhythmia, frequent urination, joint pain, weakness, feeling of a  lump in throat, dry mouth.

What to do?

As the disease is formed amid general neurosis, the approach should be complex. There is a need in joint help of a psychotherapist and a gastroenterologist. The main condition of treatment is to normalize the way of life and pay attention to rest and nutrition.
