Why does Azerbaijan buy food wheat from abroad?

12:27 - 21.09.2022

September 21, Fineko/abc.az. The State Statistics Committee informed that for Jan-Aug 2022 the Azerbaijani farms produced 1,736,100 tons of wheat (7.9% less versus Jan-Aug 2021). At that, the area of wheat acreage is also 5% less than for the same term of 2021.

ABC.AZ reports that economists emphasize that 600,000 hectares out of 1 million hectares of grain are sown with wheat in our country.

"The harvest volume corresponds to the demand of the country. However, the quality of wheat is low, as a result of which the demand for food wheat is met by imports. Most of the imports depend on Russia. After the introduction of export restrictions in this country, Azerbaijan began to buy wheat from Kazakhstan. But then Kazakhstan also imposed restrictions, and we moved to the Indian market," the economists say.
